The Alto Genal Valley is hard to find. So are the good eating places. We will reveal all to save you the trouble.

CALLE CORCHUELO (which is the main street going down to the church)
FARAJAN (which is 8 stunning kilometers from Hotel Los Castaños)
TEL: 952180660
CUISINE: Andalucian Mediterranean

We have been going a lot recently to Farajan, to the Vista del Valle, which, as you can see in the photo above, lives up to its name. Their enclosed terrace has the most lovely views, conducive to gentle conversation and quiet digestion. Have a drink at the bar with smiley Rafa, your host. It is a lively bar with always a good selection of tapas.

Meet your cook, waitress, PR person, super smiley Isa.

We always go a bit early because it is a busy little place, popular with locals and local foreigners. The food is standard Andalucian fare with a flair. On this particular occasion I had a fresh mixed salad to begin; the guys had callos which is tripe but don´t let that put you off - a local dish rich with garbanzos and paprika. Others had the picadillo soup, warming on a chilly winter´s day. For the main dish, most of the group had one of the several cuts of pork on offer, simply served with great French fries and some delicious locally collected setas.

I had bacalao pil pil which was also served interestingly with chips - different but tasty!

We were too full for dessert but, if Isa has had time, she makes the most delicious lemon mousse so be sure to ask.

Other outstanding morsels are the stuffed mushrooms which frankly are worth dying worth!

The chupitos come at the end of the meal - shots of homemade liqueurs with the house speciality taking star place.
