Dining in and around Cartajima

At Los Castanos we serve 3-course candle-lit dinners most evenings. We cook to order so guests ask at breakfast to dine that evening. Our culinary focus is Western Mediterranean flavours, Spanish and Moroccan, using local produce. 28 euros per person for appetisers, three courses, coffee.

Cartajima has one of the best ventas in the area. Casa Amalia offers simple excellent Andalucian fare. Interestingly, their son is set to become one of Spain’s top chefs.

In the church square is the town bar run by Salvador – a hub of village life – where you can meet the locals, watch the animated incomprehensible card games, and enjoy good tapas.

Food for Thought? is a guest from Houston’s interesting take on dining in Cartajima.

Further afield in other Alto Genal villages, Juzcar offers another busy village scene. The ever-beaming Antonio serves a great value menu de dia. In Alpandeire is Casa Grande which we save for special occasions. John says their beef is unequalled and I adore the carpaccio de langostinos. Jesus and Rosa are warm hosts and their wine list impressive.

Ronda is a busy tourist destination and we can tell you what to avoid. And the restaurants we enjoy:

Almocobar in the Barrio San Francisco – largely undiscovered by tourists – is great. Small, so can be hard to get a table but we can help you with that. Used to be smoky but with Spain’s new laws, no longer a problem. In the same area is the Predicatorio which must have the best views of Ronda and the most comfortable patio chairs ever. La Cuadra is a real Spanish affair – we have never had a bad meal there and can recommend it heartily. Their fried olives are an amazing surprise. Our guests rave about Bar Mateus which has probably the best ensaladilla rusa and habitas con jamon. We stop often at Venta El Mirador for tasty tapas.
